Making Christmas

Chas · December 15, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Last night the youngest two of my brood and I stayed up late to work on some Christmas presents. I had an idea and they helped me execute my plan.
Tomorrow my family will host our annual Christmas with Shannon’s side of the family. First time ever that it will be here, so there is MUCH to do. But along with all that has to be done, we have to make the presents. This particular present I wanted to wait til close to the day to make because I wanted it to be super soft and ready for little hands.
We made homemade, non-toxic play dough for our youngest cousins. It was a lot of fun to make and I think it will be even more fun to play with later!
The process is easy if this is something that will fit the bill for someone you have on your gift list!
Here’s how you do it!
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/3 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
Mix together in a 2 quart pot over medium heat until it begins to thicken, then add your food coloring.
Once the mixture begins to stick to the spoon and come together, scrape it onto a sheet of wax paper and knead until very smooth and supple. You *might* want to spray your hands with a little non-stick spray to begin with, it helped us a little.
To make the full amount we have here which is 6 containers with 6 colors, each batch made 3 balls. So we doubled the recipe to get all we need.
Finished project.
Oops… Carlie and I both noticed the odd ball and had to fix it.
Ahh… now, that’s better!

The containers are just little plastic rectangle food storage containers, they were big enough to hold the six colors I wanted us to make.
Next we printed out the name on the vinyl machine and then tied a sweet little cookie cutter on with some ribbon. I think it is a precious gift for a little one!
