Being content…

Chas · May 27, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned,
in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound:
every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry,
both to abound and to suffer need.
Philippians 4:11-12
In the world we live in today, it is difficult to be able to be ‘content’. The ads of television, magazines, newspapers lure us with bigger, better, brighter. They make us feel inadequate with who we are and what we have, assuring us that true happiness is just around the corner when we buy their products.
It is difficult to break away from this pattern.
I, by NO means, am there… but I want to be. I have found one thing that helps is the absence of television in our home. The constant junk that filters through that black box is one of the biggest contentment-robbers out there.
Anyway off my soapbox… 🙂 I hope to try to keep my eyes focused on what is true and eternal and off of all the ‘stuff’ that this world has to offer.
May your day be blessed my friend.

I agree with you 100%.. TV and radio are off during the day…It's so peaceful listening to the birds and the sounds of nature..when we don't watch TV we don't want to go out to eat or go buy the thing we HAVE to have but sits in the corner after awhile..Have a great day..Lisa

I agree completely. It is so hard to be content with what we have, what God has given us- family, health, love, shelter, food when everything around us says to do more… why do we need more? Why do we need bigger and better. I have been finding it hard to be around certain friends who dont agree and think life should be lived and enjoyed in BIG ways, that the more vacations and trips they go on the better they will be, new cars, name-brand clothing, etc… It is hard for me to see them searching for something they wont find until they are content with what they already have…

    Dearest Chas,

I couldn't agree more with your sentiments about television…the advertisers make you feel that your life is not complete until you get that new toaster!

I also think shopping in general makes folks "want" things that they really don't need. I know, speaking only for myself, that I feel my wardrobe is perfectly fine until I happen to go to the mall (we generally find ourselves there once a year) and I realize that I dress like Ma Ingalls. Just for a moment I want to re-do my entire wardrobe!

    Then I get a grip on myself….

    Yours so kindredly,

The word *content* carries a lot of power. Let's not put DIS with it……
